About The Heart of August
The Heart of August is named for Owen, my first son and Becky’s first grandson. My mom and I began making various crafts and hosting craft parties to help fund my fertility treatments. At the end of 2014, after 7 years of infertility and many, many treatments, we were so lucky and finally pregnant. I was thrilled to find out I was pregnant with twins. Sadly, we lost one of the twins at 10 weeks. Just 3 weeks after our loss, we were told our remaining baby would not survive due to a fatal bladder defect. We searched out of state for second and third opinions. Miraculously, his first defect resolved itself midway through the pregnancy but a second defect had been found – Hypo-plastic Right Heart. Our plan was to carry him to term with the hope that he would be a candidate for heart surgery. Our sweet boy, Owen, was born on August 2, 2015 lived for 28 days in the NICU before passing away on August 30, 2015. The first and last day of August served as bookends surrounding his short life. This shop is fittingly named for the sweet baby boy who made me a mama, my mom a nana and lived in the Heart of August.
